Remembering Together

Remembering Together

Current Project

SUMMARY

Remembering Together is a participatory, arts-based project that brings together people living with dementia, their caregivers, community partners, and USC students to co-create personalized visual memory albums through photography, storytelling, and creative design. Centering Black and Latino communities, which are disproportionately affected by dementia and often face barriers to culturally responsive care, the project offers a dignified space to honor identity, preserve cultural memory, and strengthen connection.

Across three hands-on workshops at Las Fotos Project, participating families will collaborate with USC and Las Fotos Project students to create physical and optional digital albums reflecting the life, culture, and identity of each person living with dementia. Families will retain ownership and control over their albums and any documentation they choose to share. Through this process, the project seeks to promote joy, reduce caregiver stress and stigma, and develop a replicable model for culturally responsive, arts-based dementia care.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • Enhance the emotional well-being of people living with dementia and their caregivers through photography, storytelling, and creative expression.
  • Honor participants’ identities, experiences, and cultural memories through personalized visual memory albums.
  • Strengthen relationships between people living with dementia and their caregivers through shared storytelling and reflection.
  • Reduce the stigma and social isolation associated with dementia by centering participants’ humanity, creativity, and lived experiences.
  • Provide USC students with community-engaged learning that develops empathy, cultural humility, and skills in working with aging populations.
  • Ensure that participants retain ownership and control over their albums, photographs, and personal stories.
  • Develop a replicable, community-centered workshop model that can support future arts-based dementia programming.
